The special court of Pakistan has extended Imran Khan's judicial remand till September 13 in the Cipher case. Because of this, the way of immediate release of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan from prison has now been closed.
Justice Abul Hasnat Zulkarnain came to Attock jail in Punjab province for the hearing. Due to security reasons, his hearing was arranged in the jail itself. It may be mentioned that a classified government document missing in the Cipher case was waved by Imran Khan in a public meeting last year.
Khan, 70, has been lodged in Attock jail since August 5 after being convicted in the Toshakha corruption case. It may be mentioned that yesterday a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court quashed his sentence. However, he could not be released as the judge hearing the Cipher case ordered that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief be kept in custody.
Then the hearing was conducted today. Justice Zulkarnan has extended Imran Khan's judicial remand till September 13. Which means that Imran Khan will remain in jail for now.
Meanwhile, legal experts have said that despite the Islamabad High Court's order of acquittal in Toshkha's case, she will not be able to contest the election as Imran Khan's lawyers committed a grave mistake by not filing an appeal to set aside the August 5 order of the trial court.
Prominent legal expert and lawyer Faisal Siddiqui has said that Imran's lawyers had only appealed for quashing of his sentence and release on bail, not quashing of the sentence order. He could have contested the election if he had appealed to set aside the sentence order.
