The world's first wind-powered ship set sail from Antwerp loaded with crude oil

Antwerp, February 21, 2024, Tuesday

Once upon a time, sailing boats were propelled by wind, but in modern times, the world's first wind-powered hybrid oil tanker has embarked on its maiden voyage. Weed energy i.e. wind energy is a form of solar energy which is considered as zero carbon clean energy. The ship, Chemical Challenger, left Antwerp port for Istanbul.

Four 53 feet high propellers are mounted on top of the ship. MT Chemical Challenger is a chemical loading vessel that can carry a maximum chemical load of 16 thousand tons. Experiments with this Japanese-built ship will also take place during the tour. Wind-powered ships are crucial to reducing the carbon footprint of ocean-going cargo ships.

Wind energy can save up to 20 percent fuel in ships. According to the International Energy Agency, 2 percent of the total carbon emissions in 2022 were accounted for by the shipping industry. The use of conventional fuels such as diesel in ships has increased carbon emissions.

The International Maritime Organization has set a target of reducing carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030. The ship owner hopes that the ship's journey will prove to be a milestone in the transformation of the shipping industry by equipping it with green energy.
