Clashes in Arakan between Myanmar's army and scholars, threat to Sittwe port

New Delhi, 20th February, 2024, Tuesday

In Myanmar, fighting between the army and insurgents continues to escalate in border areas. Clashes are going on between the rebel Arakan Army and the Junta Army in the town of Sittwe in Rakhine province. In the city of Sittwe, India built a port to establish contact with the North Eastern states through the Bay of Bengal.

According to the information received, it was rumored that the Arakan army had given an ultimatum to leave the city. Following this rumour, many people are leaving the city and going elsewhere. Myanmar's army is concentrating on defending the port of Sittwe.

Apart from this, the threat has also increased at Kayakpyu, a Chinese port in the Bay of Bengal. According to reports, last week the Myanmar Army blew up the My Pool Away Kayauk Bridge in My Township in Rakhine.

The purpose of this operation was to prevent the insurgent Arakan army from reaching the port. Myanmar's army is facing a heavy blow from the insurgents. In Rakhine, the junta government's grip is loosening. Myanmar has a long history of military rule but for the first time the emboldened insurgents are growing, a concern for the junta government.
