Kathmandu, December 30, 2023, Saturday

According to the Gregorian calendar, the farewell hours of the year 2023 are ringing. Everyone is clamoring to welcome the new year. A colorful New Year is celebrated in different parts of the world on the night of 31st December. India being a country with different cultures, traditions and religions, a new year is celebrated every month but it will be surprising to know that India's neighboring country Nepal completely follows the Hindu calendar. It does not follow the Gregorian calendar. Hence, January 1 is not considered a new year.

Despite the majority of Hindus in India, only the English months, which are considered international, are followed in daily life instead of the Hindu calendar. While in Nepal only Hindu calendar is followed. Hindu calendar is the popular name of Vikram Samvat calendar which is popular in India for decades. After independence, when the calendar had to be chosen, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's government adopted Vikram Samvat along with Gregorian.

However, the Gregorian calendar was not left out to coordinate with other countries at the international level. British rule in India for 250 years also had an effect. Talking about Nepal, there is one country in the world which has not been a slave to anyone. Nepal also did not suffer the slavery of the British. Hence he did not inherit any English customs. Nepal follows the Hindu calendar. Vikram Samvat calendar is 57 years ahead of Gregorian calendar.

The official use of Vikram Samvat in Nepal was started by the Rana dynasty in 1901 AD. This calendar of Hinduism is named after the great ruler Vikramaditya born in 102 BC in the Ujjain state of central India. The calendar is based on the position of the moon and the time of the earth's orbit around the sun.

Vikram Samvat was started by King Bhartuhari. Vikramaditya was the younger brother of Bhartuhari. Bhartuharin was saddened by his wife's betrayal and took sanyas. Rajpat was handed over to Vikramaditya. Vikramaditya was a very popular king. His enterprise and agility were far and wide known. The name of Samvat was popularized by his name.
