Drones and missiles are being launched by the Iran-backed Houthi group to target cargo ships in the Red Sea.
On the other hand, drones and missiles of the Houthis are being shot down by warships of the American Navy. The US is concerned about the threat posed to shipping lanes in the Red Sea, and another concern is the economic burden of the Houthi attacks.
American ships have shot down 38 drones and several missiles in the past two months. The USS Carney shot down 13 drones in a single day on Saturday. Defense Department officials say American ships are about to use expensive missiles to shoot down cheap Houthi drones.
An American warship launches a missile worth 2 million dollars and the drone used by the Houthis is not even worth 2000 dollars.
An official of the Ministry of Defense told a media on the condition of anonymity that the expenditure being incurred to control the Houthis is not in our favor. This is an issue that needs attention and the Department of Defense needs to consider less expensive options.
According to former US defense official Mick Mulroy, even if the US has been successful in destroying the missiles and drones of the Houthi group, the cost behind it could be a problem. America needs to think of a cheaper system to shoot down Houthi drones.
Although the missiles being used by the US have not been disclosed due to security reasons, according to some former officials and experts of the Defense Department, there is a possibility that the American warships are using the Standard Missile-2. Which is a medium range air defense missile and has a range of up to 130 km. Each missile costs about 2 million dollars.
According to the informants, the Sea Sparrow missile has also been developed to strike at the shortest distance. However, it also costs 18 lakh dollars per unit. However, due to its short range, there is a possibility of the drone colliding with the ship, so the possibility of the standard missile-2 being used by the US increases.
