New Delhi, dated 30 November 2023, Thursday

Amid strained relations with Pakistan, the Taliban government in Afghanistan seems to be in a mood to develop rapprochement with India.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Mohammad Abbas of the Taliban government has said that we will reopen the closed Afghan embassy in New Delhi very soon. Officials from the Afghan consulates in Hyderabad and Mumbai have also visited the Delhi-based embassy following a tip-off from Kabul.

He said that Afghanistan wants to maintain good relations with its neighboring countries.

It is worth mentioning that recently the Afghan Mission under the control of Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundje announced the permanent closure of the embassy in New Delhi in view of the continuous challenges posed by the Indian government. Ambassador Farid Mamundje was appointed by the then Ashraf Ghani government. However, the Taliban overthrew his government. Ashraf Ghani is currently out of the country.

Even before this, the Afghan embassy had alleged that there was no support from the Indian government. After that, some media reports claimed that the Taliban had appointed some other officer in place of Mamundje. In the same context, Qadir Shah, who was working as a Trade Counselor of the Afghan Embassy, wrote a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs of India and claimed that I have been appointed as the in-charge of the Afghan Embassy by the Taliban.

After this claim, tension started in the Afghan embassy and later it was announced to close the embassy.
