Helping Ukraine becomes a problem for America, Russia's parliament took a big decision, Putin's approval is pending
Russian Council Approves Bill To Revoke Nuclear Test Ban Treaty: Amid the ongoing war with Ukraine, the Russian Parliament has taken an important decision regarding nuclear testing. After the lower house of Russia, now the upper house of the Russian Parliament (Russian Council) has also revoked the approval of the global nuclear test ban. That means Russia is now free to conduct new nuclear tests. However, the move will increase tensions between Moscow and the West.
Now this bill will be sent to President Putin
Russia has considered this decision as a step to establish equality with America. The Federation Council passed a bill revoking the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The bill will now be sent to President Vladimir Putin for final approval.
Will cancel the decision taken 23 years ago
The lower house approved the bill last week. Putin warned earlier this month that Moscow could reverse its 2000 decision to approve a related bill that matched America's stance. Russia alleged that the US signed the nuclear test ban but did not abide by it. The CTBT, adopted in 1996, bans all nuclear tests in the world. However, this treaty was never fully implemented.
A situation of global crisis may arise
Currently, tensions between Russia and the US are at their highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. In such a situation, resumption of nuclear tests by Russia, America or both countries could prove extremely fatal for the entire world. Russia has inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union. Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world thanks to these weapons inherited from the former Soviet Union. In such a situation, this tension can create a global crisis.
Putin also resents military aid to Ukraine
Both America and Ukraine have been shocked by this decision of Russia. Russia has said that the treaty it has decided to scrap is pending approval by China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran and Egypt. It is believed that Russia may move to resume nuclear testing to halt military aid to Ukraine.
10 nuclear tests since implementation of CTBT
According to the United Nations, more than 2,000 nuclear tests were conducted in the five decades between 1945 and the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Of these, 1,032 were done by the United States and 715 by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union last tested in 1990 before its collapse, while the US last tested in 1992. 10 nuclear tests have been conducted since CTBT. According to the United Nations, India conducted two tests in 1998, Pakistan also conducted two tests in 1998, and North Korea conducted two tests in 2006, 2009, 2013, 2016 (twice) and 2017.
