Typhoon Doxuri wreaks havoc in Beijing, China, 31,000 people flee their homes



BEIJING, July 31, 2023, Monday

China is one of the most typhoon-prone countries in the world. Recently, a typhoon named Doksuri flooded the Mengou River in a district of western Beijing that passes through Beijing. Two people were stretched in the river.

According to a CCTV report, more than 31,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes. In addition to Beijing, Hebei and Tianjin began receiving heavy rains in the eastern part of the country due to the Doksari typhoon. The cyclone wreaked havoc before weakening as it moved towards northern China. Numerous cars and two-wheelers were swept away in the flood.


According to the city's observatory, parts of Mengouou received up to 580 mm of rain. A traffic update from Beijing Radio said the 105-km-long Fengsha railway line, which connects western Beijing's Fengtai district with Hebei Shecheng, was severely damaged by the flood. Railway crew rescued 200 passengers from two stranded trains.

Flooded people were rescued by rubber boats by a civil rescue team in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. Work at more than 4,000 construction sites was forced to stop. More than 20000 buildings were damaged. Doksuri snapped a powerline when it made landfall on Friday. Trees were uprooted. About 880,000 people were affected in coastal Fujian.
