A major decision regarding the army in Pakistan, soldiers who disclose sensitive information will be severely punished


Pakistan PTI yesterday formed a one-member commission to probe the role of its senators in passing the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2023. According to a local news agency, anyone who divulges sensitive information related to the army or defames the armed forces in any way can be jailed for up to 5 years.

The Pakistan Senate approved the bill with a majority

The Pakistan Senate on 27 July passed a bill to amend the Pakistan Army Act 1952 with a majority. In which strict action has been demanded against those who disclose sensitive information of the country's security or armed forces. Apart from this, the core committee meeting decided to take disciplinary action against those MPs who were found guilty of deviating from the party policy regarding the passage of the Army Act in the Senate.

The former ruling party announced on Twitter that a one-man panel headed by Senator Shibli Faraz will immediately begin an inquiry into the role of PTI senators in approving the bill and submit its recommendations to the party president. The statement said strict action would be taken against those found guilty of deviating from the party line in the light of the commission's recommendations. The core committee meeting also discussed the current political situation in the country, preparations for the upcoming general elections, the party's political strategy and other issues.

Punishment with rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years

The bill introduced by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif is the Pakistan Army Amendment Act 2023. It has been said that those who disclose information against the interest of the country or the Pakistan Army. Action will be taken against them under Official Secrets Act and Army Act. The Bill states that if any person who is subject to this Act, discloses or causes to be disclosed any information obtained in his official capacity which is prejudicial to the security and interest of Pakistan or the armed forces of Pakistan are guilty of any offence. A conviction shall be made by a court constituted under this Act , shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years.
