56 MPs in the US wrote to the government to offer relief to Indian green card applicants

195 years waiting period reduced to current submission

An Indian applicant has to wait 195 years for a green card, but applicants from other 150 countries do not have to wait at all.

Washington: A group of 56 Congressmen led by Raja Krishnamurthy and Larry Buckshon have submitted an executive action to the Biden administration to reduce the priority date of Indian green card applicants from 195 years to the present. 56 MPs have written to Secretary of State Anthony Blicken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, urging them to take administrative action to provide relief to these highly skilled visa holders.

In their letter, the congressmen urged the administration to update all application dates in the visa bulletin published by the Bureau of Consular Affairs in employment-based visa applications. Doing so will allow applicants to make employment-based visa applications without having to worry about country-based priority dates. Due to this, thousands of individuals will be able to get reliefs like eligibility to get job change documents, eligibility to start business and permission to go abroad to visit family without penalty. In the absence of an administrative mandate, such green card applicants are forced to work for a single company because of their status.

Officially called a Permanent Resident Card colloquially known as a Green Card is a document issued to an immigrant to the US. It is proof that the holder of this document has been granted the privilege of permanent residence.

Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy said we have called for an end to bureaucratic delays in our legal immigration system, which is holding back our economy and many families. Using the powers it has under current law, the administration can help strengthen our economy and create jobs by removing this burden. Aman Kapur, president of Immigration Voice, said that at the root of the problem is a discriminatory immigration system that makes Indian citizens wait 195 years for a green card, while applicants in 150 other countries have no such wait.
