The US Supreme Court on Thursday banned the basis of caste or color in university admissions. It dealt a major blow to the decades-old practice of affirmative action. Many people including Congressman Ro Khanna of Indian origin, President Biden, former President Barack Obama, current Vice President Kamala Harris have criticized this decision, while former US President Donald Trump himself is in favor of this decision.
What did the American MP of Indian origin say?
Indian-origin Congressman Ro Khanna criticized the Supreme Court's order regarding this decision. The court in its judgment has banned admissions in colleges on the basis of caste and colour. Ro Khanna said in an interview that the US Supreme Court has done a terrible injustice to the future leaders of this country. The issue is not being talked about, how will it harm the students? Not just Black or Latino students, but White and Asian American students as well. Also think about the students who go to Harvard who want to be the future political leaders, the future presidents, the senators of this country. You'd think they'd have a better chance of doing so if they were in a class that didn't have African American or Latino representation. Khanna said that the Supreme Court is doing injustice to the future leaders of this country in a multi-caste democracy.
Barack Obama criticized
Former US President Barack Obama tweeted that affirmative action has never been enough to create a more just society but for generations of students who have been systematically excluded from most of America's mainstream institutions. He tried to show us that we deserve more than one seat on the bench. Keeping in mind the recent decision of the Supreme Court, it is time for us to redouble our efforts. When Michelle Obama said that my heart breaks for any young person who wonders what their future holds and what opportunities await them.
Donald Trump in favor of the decision
It may be mentioned that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court wrote in the judgment that students should be treated as individuals based on their experience. Not on the basis of caste. Former US President Trump declared his support for this decision. Trump said this is a great day for America.
President Biden protested
The current US President Joe Biden has opposed this decision. He said that he should not be allowed to stand still for the country. We have to keep the doors of opportunity open. We have to find a way forward.
