In America, the Supreme Court has banned casteism in university admissions. This has dealt a major blow to the decades-old practice of affirmative action. This decision will greatly help in providing educational opportunities to African-Americans and other minorities. Chief Justice John Roberts said students should be treated as individuals based on their experience, not their race.
The Supreme Court made an important comment
On the court's decision, former US President Barack Obama said that this decision has given us an opportunity to show that we deserve more than a seat on the bench. The Supreme Court said that a university is free to consider an applicant's personal experience, even if, for example, it prioritizes its application over academically more suitable applicants who grew up experiencing racism.
Admission decision discriminatory based on applicant's color or caste
But deciding primarily on the basis of whether an applicant is white, black, or other, in itself constitutes racial discrimination, Roberts wrote. He said that our constitutional history would not tolerate that option. The court sided with an activist group, Students for Fair Admissions. The group sued the nation's oldest private and public institutions of higher education, specifically Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, over their admissions policies.
