Fishermen have to go to the sea to catch fish. Fishing is a multi-billion dollar business in the world but a unique area of the world where it rains fish. Fish pile up on the road like hail. In the north-central part of the Central American country of Honduras, near Yoro, is an area called La Union, plagued by poverty and unemployment.
Their food is the cultivation of maize and pulses which are done here in small quantities. However, a strange phenomenon happens to the people living in this area every year during the monsoon. Thousands of finger-sized brown fish fall during rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The most surprising thing is that these fish are also found in floods that occur during rains. When the rains stop and the flood recedes, the fish also disappear. In this process that goes on for years, the fish are not from the ground but in the rain.
The poor people of this area believe that God sends food along with the rain. These fish are also used as food by people. Many look forward to fishes more than rainwater. Local people believe that the fishes have been falling since a devout Christian saint prayed for food for the people of this poor area during the Spanish colony here in the 18th century. According to a 45-year-old farmer named Lucio Perez, who has been living in this area for 17 years, this is truly a gift from God.
The elders believe that this incident cannot be described. Not seeing a single fish when there is no rain is proof that it falls from the sky. The Atlantic Ocean lies 65 km from this place. So if we think in an exaggerated way, the fish will be going up in the sky during evaporation. Although this can happen sometimes, it is not possible to happen every year and regularly. This is truly a secret that only God knows. Hence people have given the name of brown silver fish as rain fish.
